Veneers – All You Need to Know

Veneers – What are they?

Veneers are thin ceramic shells that are bonded to teeth. They are used as a long-term solution to enhancing a smile. The primary function of veneers is usually purely cosmetic, to improve the look of the smile and mouth. They change the size, shape and colour of teeth, often the ones at the front, leaving the patient with a confident smile to show off.

What Can Veneers achieve?

Examples of what veneers can be used for include:

  • Replacing a chipped part of a tooth
  • Changing the shape of a tooth to match the rest
  • Improving tooth structure
  • Improving the colour of a tooth or teeth

The Process of Getting Veneers

Getting veneers ordered and fitted is an easy process that usually takes just a few appointments. Your initial assessment with your dental specialist, such as Shine Dental, will involve a thorough look at your mouth, teeth and smile. X-rays may be taken to establish the best treatment.

Your treatment plan will be discussed with you in detail, and you can view and approve the process ahead. Your teeth will be prepared for the veneers by the removal of a tiny amount of enamel. A digital impression will also be made, and your veneers will be constructed.

Once your veneers are ready, your teeth will be polished and roughened, prepared for the bonding. Your bite will be assessed to ensure the application has been successful, and any adjustments will be made.

Looking After Veneers

Veneers usually last between 10-15 years. To maximise this, you should care for them just as you would your normal teeth. The only exception is that you must use a non-abrasive toothpaste. Brushing twice daily and flossing should remain your primary oral hygiene routine. You should also be sure to book regular check-ups and appointments with the hygienist.

Risk Associated with Veneers

It is very rare for complications to arise from veneers. You should keep in mind, though, that veneers are permanent. Veneers generally face the same risks as regular teeth in terms of damage and staining. If any problems should arise once your veneers are fitted, contact your dental specialist for advice.
