Expert practice managers
As practice managers our day starts at Shine Dental Care around 7.30am. We open the door, turn off the alarm and a fresh clean smell welcomes us. Margaret, our cleaner, has already left by the time we arrive – and we think we have an early start!
We change into our uniforms and start up our computers ready to check all our emails. By this time, many of the team have arrived ready for the day ahead. We have a big team to allow us to provide extended opening hours for our patients. This means there are different members of the team in each day, every day is different but there are always smiling faces in the practice.
After we have attended the morning ‘huddle’ to discuss the day ahead as a team, we go back to our computers and get to work. Jade starts on the rota for the month ahead. This can be quite a challenging task as she must consider annual leave requests and ensure that everybody gets a fair mixture of days to work.
Sharon’s first task of the day is to calculate any overtime that is owed as a result of the team staying behind to care for patients that require emergency treatment.
We ensure that we have enough support in all areas and sometimes adjust people’s roles for the day if a certain surgery needs an extra pair of hands. We often find it helpful to have two dental nurses in one surgery, so we can provide a high standard of care to our patients.
Next Jade spends time organising the on-call rota, making sure it doesn’t clash with one of the dentists or nurses being away or on a course. Sharon prepares the whole team’s wages, making sure they are up to date with current pay scales, taking into consideration any overtime and annual leave.
We often deal with various phone calls throughout our day, as well as finding solutions to any difficulties that some of the team may have. We take a regular walk around the practice to make sure that everything is running smoothly and that our high standards are being maintained throughout.
Before we know it, the time is 7pm and the last patients leave the surgeries. We walk around one last time to ensure that the surgeries are being cleaned thoroughly and organised in preparation for the next day. We are often called Kim and Aggie, but we can’t understand why!
Teamwork is one of our top priorities at Shine Dental Care, so we are always working together to achieve the best results in everything that we do.
