Root Canal Treatment

With root canal treatment (endodontics) at Shine Dental Care in Mansfield, you can expect a pain-free procedure carried out by one of our experienced dentists with the ultimate aim of saving your tooth (rather than extracting it). Our knowledge in this field is matched by leading endodontics technology to deliver high success rates and predictable results.

Our dentists are committed to preserving your natural teeth wherever possible, as this is often better for your dental health and more cost effective in the long term. Root canal treatment is used to treat infection at the centre of a tooth (the root canal system) in order to save the tooth.

The root canal system contains dental pulp (a type of soft tissue) and extends from the crown of the tooth to the end of the root. Sometimes the pulp can be damaged by bacterial infection. You’ll feel pain when you’re biting or chewing and your tooth might feel extremely sensitive to hot and cold food and drinks. An X-ray will show problems in the root canal system and it’s important for us to act right away as the pulp cannot heal itself.

Pain-free root canal treatment at Shine Dental Care, Mansfield

Root canal treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. Using advanced techniques and technology, we will remove any infected pulp before cleaning and enlarging the root canal in preparation for it to be filled. We’ll put a small amount of medication into the cleaned canal along with temporary filling.

When the infection is cleared and all remaining bacteria killed, we’ll fill the root canal permanently to seal the tooth and prevent re-infection. Some teeth have more than one root canal, which affects treatment durations – we’ll talk through this in full during your consultation.

Our prices are clear and transparent, you’ll know exactly what to expect and when.

Frequently asked questions

About root canal treatment at Shine Dental Care, Mansfield

  1. What is a root canal?

Teeth consist of different materials including enamel, dentine and cementum. In the middle of a tooth is soft tissue known as dental pulp – the root canal system contains this dental pulp and runs from the crown of the tooth to the end of the root.

  2. Can root canal infections be treated with antibiotics?

Unfortunately not. Medications used to treat bacterial infections are not effective for root canal infections.

  3. How can I prevent further problems?

After root canal treatment it’s even more important to maintain excellent oral hygiene with regular and thorough brushing and flossing. Giving up smoking is also beneficial as is avoiding too much high-sugar food.

  1. How does the root canal become infected?

Dental pulp becomes infected by live bacteria within the mouth. This can occur because of tooth decay, damage to teeth or unsealed fillings. Once the pulp becomes infected, it cannot heal itself without treatment.

  2. What are the symptoms?

Early symptoms include discomfort when eating or drinking anything hot or cold as well as pain when biting or chewing. As the infection progresses, these symptoms may ease. This is because the pulp has died. You’ll feel as though your tooth has healed but in fact, the infection has spread through the root canal system.

In time, the original symptoms will return and you might also experience swelling of the gum and face. The tooth may also turn a darker colour.

  3. Will my tooth hurt after treatment?

Your restored tooth won’t feel painful but it might be a little sensitive for a few days. Paracetamol or ibuprofen can help relieve any discomfort.
