Gum Disease Prevention and Treatment

Gum disease is an inflammation of the gums which can progress to affect the bone surrounding the teeth. It’s exceptionally common and although the disease can become advanced, there’s a great deal that Shine Dental Care can do to both prevent and control it. We work together with our patients to tackle this problem and have an excellent track record in both prevention and treatment.

The symptoms of gum disease are typically red and inflamed or swollen gums, or gums that bleed when you brush your teeth. Most people have at least one case of mild gum disease during their lifetime with an estimated 50 to 90% of the UK’s adult population having some degree of gum disease.

At Shine Dental Care in Mansfield, we are proactive about good gum health and offer a wide range of gum treatments to tackle inflamed or bleeding gums. Regular consultations, scale and polishes, and an excellent oral health routine can all help your gums to heal. This kind of care helps to prevent further problems in the future and protects your long-term dental health.

In-depth periodontal surveys with our dentists

We carry out comprehensive periodontal surveys to assess gum disease and measure how advanced it is. Depending on your individual needs, we’ll then offer periodontal therapies to control and stabilise your gum health. If you have moderate to severe gum disease, you may need several visits. It’s really important to attend all appointments to get the problem under control to prevent future tooth loss.

Some people are more at risk from developing gum disease including smokers and people living with diabetes. Whatever your situation, we’re here to support you at Shine Dental Care and regular check-ups and hygiene appointments make a significant difference in reducing your risks and protecting your teeth.

Frequently asked questions

About gum disease prevention and treatments at Shine Dental Care, Mansfield

  1. What is gum disease?

Also known as periodontal disease, this common condition is an inflammation of the gum line. It’s caused by the build up of tartar (hardened plaque) which harbours bacteria. Tartar cannot be removed by everyday brushing meaning bacteria can build up making gums red and swollen.

This is gum disease in its mildest form and it’s known at this stage as gingivitis. If gingivitis isn’t treated it develops into periodontitis (which literally means inflammation around the tooth). Gums recede and form pockets that can become infected. If the disease is not controlled, it’s possible for teeth to become loose and need to be extracted.

  2. What are the complications?

If early gum disease (gingivitis) develops into periodontitis common complications include gum abscesses and receding gums. Teeth can loosen and will eventually be lost.

  3. What happens if I need treatment?

The most important thing is that you will be in the right place to start getting your gum disease under control. Our dentists work with patients to help devise a treatment plan that’s right for them. Hygiene appointments are often the cornerstone of gum disease treatment and are always supported by excellent oral hygiene at home.

  1. What are the symptoms?

The most common symptoms are red, inflamed and swollen gums and bleeding when you brush your teeth. Bad breath and overly sensitive teeth are also signs of gum disease.

  2. How can I prevent gum disease?

Good oral hygiene is essential to preventing gum disease. Brush twice a day and floss once a day while sticking to a healthy diet and giving up smoking. It’s also very important to come for regular check-ups and hygiene appointments. Our hygienists can help you stay on top of tartar and we can pick up potential problems in their earlier stages.

  3. What does a periodontal survey involve?

Our dentists will examine your gums carefully using a periodontal probe to detect signs of gum disease. We’ll also carry out X-rays if we have any concerns that gum disease has affected your teeth and/or jawbone. We’ll also ask some questions about your general health and lifestyle to see if you have any risk factors.
