Implant-Retained Dentures

At Shine Dental Care in Mansfield, we want to help all our patients smile, laugh and eat freely without self-consciousness. That includes our patients who wear dentures. Even the most carefully crafted of dentures can become loose over time – a fact many denture wearers are highly aware of when talking or smiling and eating chewy or crunchy foods. We can stabilise dentures with dental implants to make these problems and frustrations a thing of the past.

Our dedicated team is highly skilled in securing dentures in this way. We use 2 or more tooth implants placed painlessly into the jaw. The implants have press-stud attachments, which then clip to the dentures for a stable, comfortable fit.

Advanced denture techniques at Shine Dental Care, Mansfield

To aid stability further still (and particularly effective in retaining both an upper and lower full denture), we can connect the dental implants to a precision-made dental bar. The denture clasps around the entire dental bar which is itself retained by the press-stud attachments. Another option is a hybrid dentures and bridges solution. In this instance, the denture/bridge stays in your mouth all the time (just like natural teeth) and can only be removed by a dental professional.

Our experienced dentists will discuss the different options available and what’s most appropriate for you during your initial consultation. Many denture wearers are suitable for dental-implant treatment and it can be life changing when successful. We’ve helped many patients rediscover the freedom to eat what they like and laugh or smile without worry with implant-retained dentures.

Prices are based on your individual needs and will be provided after your initial consultation. Our prices are clear and transparent, you’ll know exactly what to expect and when. We also provide a range of payment options to help spread the costs. Read more here.

A brief guide to the implant-retained denture procedure

Our treatment plans are tailored to each of our patients, but the following guidelines give a general idea of procedure sequence and schedule:

Stage 1 – Planning

To help ensure the very best results for our patients, each case needs to be carefully planned. This may include:

  • A CBCT bone scan and radiographs (X-rays) to fully assess your teeth and supporting bone structure
  • Diagnostic wax-up, study models and surgical guide for further assessment and to help us show you the final result we’re hoping to achieve
  • We’ll also create a copy of your dentures
  • Photography for treatment assessment, planning and recording

Stage 2 – Preparing the implant sites

It’s quite common for denture wearers to have some loss of bone within the jaw. If a lot of bone volume has been lost, dental-implant treatment may not be possible. In some cases however, bone can be grafted and regenerated to make a secure base for tooth implants.

This procedure involves placing a bone substitute material into the jawline to create as much bone as possible in which to place the implant. This type of bone grafting does add to the costs and treatment time but it can make the difference between being suitable for dental implants or not.

Stage 3 – Implant placement

This procedure takes up to 2 hours and is performed under local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout. The number of dental implants you have will be determined during the planning stage.

Stage 4 – Denture placement

We usually wait a period of 8 to 16 weeks for the implant(s) to fully integrate into the surrounding bone. At this point, we can place your permanent dentures.

The benefits of dental implants in Nottingham

  • You won’t need to worry about loose dentures when you’re talking, smiling and laughing
  • You can eat whatever you like including crunchy and chewy foods
  • Tooth implants help to preserve and strengthen your jawbone to avoid the ‘caved-in’ appearance seen in denture wearers
  • Implants integrate into your jawbone so they last a long time

Frequently Asked Questions

About implant-retained dentures at Shine Dental Care, Mansfield

  1. What is a dental implant?

A dental implant consists of an artificial tooth root and man-made replacement tooth. In the case of implant-retained dentures, the man-made teeth are the dentures themselves. The root is placed beneath the gum line and into the jawbone so that dentures can be securely affixed to it.

For denture wearers, using tooth implants to stabilise dentures provides stability that cannot be achieved with even the most well fitting of dentures. The dentures are effectively anchored into place by the dental implants allowing you to eat, smile and talk without the worry of loose dentures.

  2. Is the surgery painful?

The implant procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout.

  3. How do I care for implant-retained dentures?

It’s important to brush twice a day around the dental implants and gum area. You’ll also need to keep your dentures meticulously clean – how you do this will depend on whether the dentures are fixed in your mouth or designed to be removed for cleaning. We will talk this through in detail before and after your treatment is complete.

  1. Will I be suitable for dental implants?

At Shine Dental Care, we fully assess your needs and listen to your concerns to offer all possible treatment options. We’re also very honest about what to expect and potential results. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis or are a smoker, dental implants may not be right for you.

It is quite common to have some loss of bone volume in the jaw if you have been wearing dentures for a while. Sometimes we are able to use a bone substitute material to create a secure base for the implants to be placed into. We’ll talk this through in detail during your consultation.

  2. How long does the treatment take?

This will depend on several factors including the strength of your jawbone. We will provide a timeline as soon as we’ve made a full assessment of your mouth and bone volume.

  3. How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants can last for many years (even a lifetime) if you care for them properly. They are a genuine long-term solution to missing teeth.
