Children’s Dentistry

As a family-friendly dental practice, we love helping children start on their journey to good dental health. From babies and toddlers coming along for your regular check-up to help with hygiene for older children and teeth straightening for teens – we’re here to give your child a smile they can feel confident about for the rest of their life.

When it comes to good oral health, the sooner you start the better. That’s why we actively encourage parents to bring babies and toddlers along for their dental check-ups. It’s a great way for children to become familiar with the dentist before they start attending their own visits.
It’s quite common for young children to become reluctant for a dentist to examine their teeth, especially as their milk teeth are coming through. Our dentists are very experienced in working with young children and provide a gentle introduction to visiting the dentist. As children get older, we encourage regular check-ups and hygienist appointments to pick up potential problems as soon as they occur, if not before.

Frequently asked questions

About children’s dentistry at Shine Dental Care, Mansfield

  1. How can I help my child to brush their teeth properly?

Our dentists and hygienist can give you lots of advice and demonstrate the best ways to brush and care for teeth with your child at our family-friendly practice. At home, try standing behind your child so that you hold the toothbrush in the same way as you would when brushing your own teeth. Use a soft toothbrush and a children’s toothpaste, then gently guide the toothbrush around the mouth focusing on sections at a time (i.e. upper right-hand side teeth, then lower right-hand side etc.).

Be gentle and keep things light-hearted – it’s also a great idea to use a 2-minute timer for your child to look at. This helps to establish longer cleaning times from a young age. When your child is old enough, encourage them to spit without rinsing to increase the benefits of the fluoride in the toothpaste.

  2. What if my child hates going to the dentist?

The most important point is not to worry – this is quite common and most children overcome their anxieties in time. Our dentists are highly experienced in helping children to feel more positive about visiting us. We’re a child-friendly practice and you can be certain of a warm welcome and friendly advice and support.

  1. Does thumb sucking or using a dummy cause dental problems?

Many babies and toddlers find using a dummy or sucking their thumb soothing and reassuring. This can cause problems when permanent teeth begin to come through as it puts pressure on the front teeth and narrow the arch of the mouth’s roof.

We’ll keep a close eye on your child’s tooth development and can advise on ways to encourage stopping thumb and dummy sucking.

  2. How does sugar affect dental health?

Tooth decay is caused by bacteria in the mouth. When we eat or drink something sugary, the bacteria uses the sugar to produce acids that damage the teeth. Perhaps one of the most important things to remember is that it’s the frequency of sugar in a child’s diet that leads to tooth decay (rather than the amount of sugar). Stick to single treats after a meal and avoid sweets that last a long time such as lollipops and sticks of rock. It’s also important to think about the sugar in drinks. Fruit juices and diluted juices still contain relatively high amounts of sugar that can lead to decay.
