A Day in the Life – Dental Nurse Lizzie
Hi, I’m Lizzie, one of the qualified Dental Nurses at Shine Dental Care in Mansfield. I started my journey at Shine back in March 2017 and since my first day I have worked alongside all of the dentists and hygienists.
My role involves splitting my time equally between the surgeries and doing non-clinical work such as regularly checking dates on emergency drugs and oxygen, as well as maintaining stock levels. During the beginning of the week I usually check stock levels, then order items that are needed to make the practice run smoothly. Since being given the responsibility of handling stock it has made me realise how much items cost, and I understand working more efficiently to conserve stock.
I also work in the decontamination room at the beginning of the week. The decontamination room is where all the instruments get sterilised and processed so that all surgeries are stocked up with instruments ready for the busy day ahead. I enjoy the challenge of how busy it can get behind the scenes in the decontamination room, and I always ensure that I keep it spick and span as I like to be very organised.
Recently I worked a lot with Matt, our Implant Coordinator, and David Heath specifically with implant procedures. Working with David is a pleasure in itself as he always has new things to teach me. The day is always organised and very laid back, not to mention we’re always laughing when we’re together – although this could be something to do with my Sheffield accent!
I have also spent a lot of time with Faith, she was one of the first people I worked with when I joined Shine. She was extremely friendly and made me feel very welcome as it is takes time to get used to each dentist’s preferred way of working. I eventually got there, and we are now described as the dream team! Every day is an exciting challenge in dentistry, you never know what the day is going to bring.
I really enjoy working at Shine, the staff are a lovely bunch and we always work together as a team.
