Full Arch Dental Implants

Full arch dental implant treatment replaces a complete set of teeth. Yet at Shine Dental Care, we know this procedure means so much more. Life-changing and liberating, it enables our patients to smile and laugh with confidence and eat whatever they like. We take a lot of pride in patients’ positive reactions and have carried out many successful full arch dental implant treatments.

Traditionally, there were no fixed solutions for people who had lost all of their teeth and dentures were the only option. Dentures become looser and less uncomfortable over time as gums and jawbone recede due to the lack of tooth root. They can also affect speech and make eating chewy or crunchy foods more difficult.

Dental implants have revolutionised treatment for those with no teeth as they provide a long-term solution that’s stable enough to look, feel and work like the real thing. They replace the missing tooth root and are designed to fuse with the jawbone. As they integrate with the bone, they last for many years and can even be cleaned like natural teeth.

Immediate full arch loading (IFAL) or teeth-in-a-day treatment

Replacing a complete set of teeth can take up to 12 months which is why we also provide ‘teeth-in-a-day’ or immediate full arch loading (IFAL). This advanced treatment is meticulously planned and uses 4 to 6 tooth implants to which temporary bridges are placed. We will then carefully craft permanent bridges while the tooth implants heal. Results are incredibly natural with no visible signs that you ever had missing teeth.

Prices are based on your individual needs and will be provided after your initial consultation. Our prices are clear and transparent, you’ll know exactly what to expect and when. We also provide a range of payment options to help spread the costs. Read more here.

A brief guide to the immediate full arch loading (IFAL) procedure

Our treatment plans are tailored to each of our patients, but the following guidelines give a general idea of procedure sequence and schedule:

Planning

To help ensure the very best results for our patients, each case needs to be carefully planned. This is particularly true for IFAL treatment. The following will be carried out:

  • A CBCT bone scan and radiographs (X-rays) to fully assess supporting bone structure
  • Diagnostic wax-up, study models and surgical guide for further assessment and to help us show you the final result we’re hoping to achieve
  • Photography for treatment assessment, planning and recording
Preparing the implant sites

If there are any remaining teeth, they will be extracted and allowed to heal for a period of 8 to 12 weeks before treatment goes ahead.

It may also be beneficial to perform a socket preservation procedure. This involves placing a bone substitute material into the socket to create as much bone as possible in which to place the implant.

Treatment day

Replacing a complete set of teeth in a day is an advanced procedure that requires a considerable amount of time in the clinic. We’ll talk this through in detail during your consultation.

  • Morning – any remaining teeth are extracted under local anaesthetic before the implants are placed. We’ll take impressions of the tooth implants at this point.
  • 2 to 3 hours later – our dental technician will make your temporary bridges before we carry out a trial fit.
  • Late afternoon – after any necessary refinements and adjustments have been made, your temporary bridges will be fitted and you’re free to go with a complete set of teeth!
  • After 6 months – we’ll remove the temporary bridges before taking new impressions and making your final bridges.

Frequently Asked Questions

About full arch dental implants at Shine Dental Care, Mansfield

  1. What are 'full arch implants'?

Full arch implants, also known as full-arch dental implants or full-arch restoration, refer to a comprehensive dental treatment approach for replacing an entire arch of missing teeth in the upper or lower jaw. It is a solution for individuals who have lost multiple teeth or are facing complete tooth loss in one or both arches.

The procedure involves the placement of dental implants, which are small titanium posts or screws that serve as artificial tooth roots. These implants are surgically inserted into the jawbone to provide a stable foundation for a dental prosthesis, such as a full-arch denture or bridge.

Typically, four to six dental implants are strategically placed in the jawbone to support the entire arch of teeth. The precise number of implants required may vary based on individual needs and the condition of the jawbone. Once the implants have integrated with the bone during the healing process (osseointegration), a long term or removable dental prosthesis is attached to the implants to restore function and aesthetics.

Full arch implants offer several advantages over traditional dentures, including improved stability, enhanced chewing ability, and a more natural-looking smile. They provide a long-term solution for patients who want a fixed set of teeth and do not want to deal with the limitations and inconveniences associated with removable dentures.

It is important to consult with a qualified dental professional, such as a prosthodontist or oral surgeon, to determine if full arch implants are a suitable treatment option for your specific dental needs.

  2. How does it work?

Full arch implants work by replacing an entire arch of missing teeth with dental implants that function as artificial tooth roots. Here is an overview of the process:

    1. Consultation and planning: The first step is to consult with a dental professional who has in implant dentistry knowledge, such as a prosthodontist or oral surgeon. They will evaluate your oral health, assess the condition of your jawbone, and discuss your goals and expectations. Dental imaging, such as X-rays or CT scans, may be taken to create a detailed treatment plan.
    2. Implant placement: During the surgical procedure, dental implants made of biocompatible titanium are precisely placed into the jawbone. The number of implants required will depend on the specific case and the treatment plan. Typically, four to six implants are used per arch. Local anaesthesia or sedation is used to ensure a comfortable experience.
    3. Osseointegration: After the implants are placed, a healing period of several months is necessary to allow for a process called osseointegration. During this time, the implants fuse with the surrounding jawbone, creating a strong and stable foundation for the replacement teeth. Temporary dentures or a provisional prosthesis may be provided during the healing phase.
    4. Abutment placement: Once osseointegration has occurred, the dental implants are uncovered, and abutments are attached to them. Abutments are connectors that protrude above the gumline and serve as attachment points for the final dental prosthesis.
    5. Prosthesis placement: After the abutments are in place, the final dental prosthesis, such as a full-arch denture or bridge, is securely attached to the implants. The prosthesis is custom-made to match the shape, size, and colour of your natural teeth, providing a natural-looking and functional set of teeth.
    6. Follow-up care: Regular check-ups and maintenance visits are essential to monitor the health of your implants and the condition of your oral tissues. Good oral hygiene practices, including brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings, are important to ensure the longevity and success of your full arch implants.

Full arch implants offer a long term and reliable solution for replacing an entire arch of missing teeth. They provide stability, improved chewing ability, and a natural-looking smile, significantly enhancing the quality of life for individuals with extensive tooth loss.

  3. Do dental implants hurt?

The placement of dental implants is typically performed under local anaesthesia, which numbs the area and minimizes discomfort during the procedure. Most patients report feeling little to no pain during the implant placement process.

After the implant placement, it is common to experience some mild discomfort or soreness in the treated area for a few days. This can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications recommended by your dentist. Any discomfort is usually manageable and tends to subside relatively quickly.

It is important to follow your dentist’s post-operative instructions carefully to ensure proper healing and minimize any potential complications. Keeping the implant area clean and avoiding certain activities, such as smoking or consuming hard foods, as advised by your dentist, will contribute to a smoother recovery process.

It’s worth noting that individual experiences may vary depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the number of implants placed, and an individual’s pain threshold. Your dental professional will discuss the procedure with you in detail and address any concerns or questions you may have, ensuring your comfort throughout the implant journey.

  1. Who is suitable for 'full arch implants'?

Full arch implants are suitable for individuals who have lost a significant number of teeth or are facing complete tooth loss in one or both arches. Here are some factors that may indicate the suitability of full arch implants:

    1. Multiple missing teeth: Full arch implants are designed for individuals who are missing most, if not all, of the teeth in one or both dental arches. It is an effective solution for patients who are not candidates for individual dental implants or who prefer a comprehensive treatment approach.
    2. Sufficient jawbone density: Successful full arch implant treatment relies on having an adequate amount of healthy jawbone to support the dental implants. However, even if you have experienced some bone loss, techniques such as bone grafting or the use of specialized implants can sometimes overcome this limitation. A thorough evaluation by a dental professional can determine the condition of your jawbone and the feasibility of full arch implants.
    3. Good oral health: It is essential to have a healthy oral environment before undergoing full arch implant treatment. Any existing dental issues, such as gum disease or tooth decay, should be addressed prior to the implant procedure. A dental professional will assess your oral health and recommend any necessary treatments before proceeding with full arch implants.
    4. General health considerations: Full arch implant treatment requires a surgical procedure, and therefore, your general health plays a role in determining your suitability for the procedure. Certain medical conditions and lifestyle factors, such as uncontrolled diabetes, heavy smoking, or compromised immune system, may affect the success of the treatment. Your dental professional will evaluate your overall health and determine if full arch implants are appropriate for you.
  2. Benefits of 'full arch implants'?

Full arch implants offer several benefits for individuals who have lost a significant number of teeth or are facing complete tooth loss in one or both arches. Here are some of the key advantages of full arch implants:

    1. Enhanced stability: Full arch implants provide a stable and secure foundation for the dental prosthesis, such as a denture or bridge. Unlike traditional removable dentures, which can shift or slip during eating or speaking, full arch implants remain securely in place, allowing for increased confidence and comfort while speaking and eating.
    2. Improved chewing ability: Full arch implants restore a high level of biting and chewing function. With the stability provided by implants, individuals can comfortably enjoy a wider range of foods, including tough and crunchy items, that may be challenging to consume with traditional dentures.
    3. Aesthetically pleasing: Full arch implants offer a natural-looking smile. The dental prosthesis is custom-made to match the shape, size, and color of your natural teeth, resulting in a harmonious and attractive appearance. This can significantly enhance self-confidence and overall facial aesthetics.
    4. Long-term solution: With proper care and maintenance, full arch implants have the potential to last a lifetime. Unlike traditional dentures that may require adjustments, relining, or replacement over time, implants provide a durable and permanent tooth replacement option.
    5. Preserves jawbone health: When teeth are lost, the underlying jawbone can deteriorate over time due to lack of stimulation. Full arch implants help preserve the jawbone by providing stimulation through the implant posts, promoting bone retention and preventing bone loss. This contributes to maintaining facial structure and minimizing changes in facial appearance.
    6. Comfort and convenience: Full arch implants eliminate the need for removable dentures that can be uncomfortable, cause sore spots, or require the use of adhesives. The stability and fixed nature of implants provide a more comfortable and convenient solution, allowing individuals to enjoy their daily activities without worrying about denture maintenance or potential embarrassment.

It’s important to consult with a dental professional experienced in implant dentistry to determine if full arch implants are a suitable treatment option for your specific dental needs and goals.

  3. How long does the treatment take?

The duration of full arch implant treatment can vary depending on several factors, including the individual’s specific case, the condition of their oral health, and the treatment plan determined by the dental professional. The process typically involves multiple stages and requires some time for healing and integration. Here is a general timeline for full arch implant treatment:

    1. Consultation and planning: The initial consultation and treatment planning phase can take one or more appointments, during which the dentist evaluates your oral health, discusses your goals, takes dental impressions, and develops a comprehensive treatment plan.
    2. Implant placement: The surgical placement of dental implants usually takes one appointment. The exact time required can vary based on the number of implants being placed, the complexity of the case, and the surgeon’s expertise. On average, it can take a few hours for the implant placement surgery.
    3. Osseointegration and healing: After the implant placement, a healing period is necessary to allow the implants to integrate with the jawbone. In some situations a full arch prosthesis can be attached on the day of implant placement.
    4. Prosthesis fabrication and placement: The fabrication of the final dental prosthesis, such as a full-arch denture or bridge, can take several weeks. Once the prosthesis is ready, it is securely attached to the abutments during a separate appointment.

It’s important to note that the timeline provided above is a general guideline, and the actual duration can vary for each patient. Factors such as the need for additional procedures (such as bone grafting or extractions), the individual’s healing process, and the dentist’s schedule can influence the overall treatment time.

Your dental professional will provide you with a personalized treatment plan and a more accurate timeline based on your specific needs and circumstances. They will also guide you through each stage of the treatment and keep you informed about the estimated duration of each step.
