David and Matt’s trip to Switzerland
Earlier this month I accompanied David to the ITI World Symposium in Basel, Switzerland. As the Dental Implant Co-ordinator at Shine I have been keen to expand my knowledge and pass this on to patients to provide the best possible care. And to be honest, who would say no to an opportunity to visit Switzerland?! The ITI’s mission statement is “to serve the dental profession by providing a global growing global network for life-long learning in implant dentistry through comprehensive quality education and innovative research to the benefit of the patient”.
After an early start providing care for our patients in Mansfield, we set off to Manchester airport. We arrived at Basel airport late in the evening and then to our hotel. The following day started early, especially allowing for the hour time difference. When we arrived at the conference centre I was surprised by just how busy it was, delegates and dentists from all over the world gathering to share tips, tricks and knowledge.
World-class dental companies were exhibiting their innovative products which had David and I quite excited. The lectures I found most interesting were the breakout sessions, which were short intense 15-minute presentations on how to manage challenging cases.
Our aim at Shine is to provide the best possible care to our patients, so to be able to manage challenging cases with great confidence is something that jumped out at us.
Whilst in Switzerland I looked to take photos that represented my time there; however, I could not find a picture of a brewery so found some traditional Swiss cheese instead. Since we returned David and I have earned the nickname “Wallis and Gromit”.
The conference lasted until Saturday and late in the afternoon we headed back towards the airport for our return journey home to Nottinghamshire. Back at the practices and already we are using our new skills and sharing our new knowledge with the team.
We left the symposium feeling extremely confident in achieving long term success for our patients and felt we could now really start pushing our implant dentistry to the highest levels.
As David quotes, “Implants are one of the most complex treatments in dentistry, so it is important to keep on learning.” Well if that’s the case, then where is our next trip to?
