A Day in the Life – Dental Nurse with a Broken Leg

I started working at Shine Dental Care in Mansfield in March 2017, and in this fairly short space of time it has been very eventful!

From the first day I have worked alongside David Heath, the principal dentist at Shine, and Matt, the dental implant co-ordinator. Together we work as a team striving for the best end result for our patients – as soon as we start work at 7:45am we are discussing implant cases.

We recently added an implant suite into the practice, which is our fourth surgery. We planned on having the implant suit set up to start seeing patients at the end of August – which meant all hands-on deck!

Throughout July we were busy making sure that we had all equipment, dental instruments and materials needed to have a smooth-running implant suite. The cupboard space in the new surgery is great as we have many different implant kits.

We used the final week before the official opening to check there was everything we needed. Unfortunately, one day before the new implant suit would officially be in use I had a horse-riding accident, which resulted in a serious broken leg.

The team had to launch the new implant suite without me, as I needed a leg operation and wouldn’t be able to walk without crutches.

Since having my accident I haven’t been able to work in surgery or with our new dentist Amy, who started at Shine whilst I was recovering from the operation. Instead, I have been working on reception, helping our current patients and new patients visiting us at Shine.

I have still been helping with implants cases behind the scenes, writing implant consent forms which explain the process of the implant treatment for the patient.

I have kept up to date with important training at the practice, my crutches won’t stop me from learning and having fun. I even managed to get involved with the practical side of our fire safety training.

All the staff have been great, they’re so supportive and make sure I keep on smiling. They’ve sent me flowers and wrapped Christmas tinsel around my leg brace – I’m now known as ‘Tinsel Toes’. The team at Shine will get me back on my feet in no time.
