Gum Disease
Good dental care starts with your gums
Gum disease (also known as gingivitis) and periodontitis, which can follow a case of gum disease, are two conditions that affect the teeth and gums.
The symptoms of gum disease are typically red and inflamed or swollen gums, or gums that bleed when you brush your teeth.
Most people have at least one case of mild gum disease during their lifetime. In the UK, it is estimated that 50-90% of the adult population has some degree of gum disease. Each year in the UK, there are six cases of severe periodontitis for every 100,000 people. Aggressive or early-onset periodontitis, where severe periodontitis is present before 35 years of age, affects 1-2% of the population.
Although gum disease is exceptionally common, there are things you can do to improve or even prevent problems occurring. At Shine Dental Care, we are proactive about good gum health and offer a wide range of gum treatments to tackle inflamed or bleeding gums. Regular consultations, scale and polishes, and an excellent oral health routine can all help your gums to heal.
With Shine, you will be offered a comprehensive periodontal survey to measure how far advanced your gum disease is. We can also perform a wide range of periodontal therapies to control and stabilise your gum health. If you have moderate to severe gum disease, you may need several visits but it is important to get the problem under control in order to prevent future tooth loss.
By attending regular check-ups and hygienist appointments at Shine Dental Care, you can greatly reduce the risk of gum disease and help protect your teeth.
